Story: In a strange turn of events, Scott (Derek Vandegrift) finds himself on his way to Kingsville, Ohio when Maggie (Jo Ellen Jacob), a vulgar and outspoken woman, approaches him for help after he gets off of work one day. Maggie informs Scott that since he picked her up, he's now involved in a plot that may cost him his life. The man they are running from is simply known as DeGraw, an underground weapons dealer with unimaginable amounts of power. Right away, I knew what I was in for, because unfortunately the videoquality is poor and it shows in the first few minutes. HOWEVER, thisshould NOT discourage you!!! Not one bit! Despite every flawed sounderror, edit mistake or shaky footstep syndrome, this story GRABS you!You kind of roll your eyes at the mistakes and get sucked right backin.
This is true writing. Jo Ellen Jacob and Derek Vandegrift have made abrilliant story that is every bit enticing as it is marvelous. Plentyelements of the story threw me for a loop. Like how so unexpectedlywe're put into a frightening situation of life and death. How, beforewe even know the main character's names, the filmmakers beg the answerto the question: What would you do?
What really intrigued me most was the difference between Maggie andScott's characters. Where Scott is so free about breaking the law bysmoking pot, he's very articulate and conservative with his speech.Yet, Maggie, who is opposed to breaking the law and yearns for aprestigious career curses like a sailor. These two different peopleallow for a very interesting character study.
As the film progresses, so does the relationship between Maggie andScott. The surroundings the filmmakers show, completely add to thestory and the development of each character. But what I really enjoyedwas the lack of supporting characters. Any other person that wasintroduced, as important to the story as they are, you were lucky toever see them again. This was a fantastic touch, something that doesn'thappen much anymore in film.
Road to Kingsville is twisted, engaging and refreshingly unpredictable.This little indie film the can leaves you wanting more. I promise you,for such a short viewing time, you'll be entertained.

I randomly found 'Road to Kingsville' on YouTube while shifting throughsome of the independent titles that were recently uploaded. I read thedescription and thought it sounded at least mildly intriguing, so Ithought I'd give it a shot. I figured it was going to be a long shotthat RTK would have an IMDb page, but luckily here I am writing thisreview.
What I ended up witnessing from the final project soaringly exceededany bad expectations I got from the poor video quality. With a budgetthat was clearly done out of pocket, you could tell the director tookevery cent and squeezed as much out of it as possible. The shots areinspiring, well thought out and eager to catch your eye. It's only ashame they weren't able to get better equipment. I can only imagine howmuch more interesting everything would've been.
However, it isn't the shots that really require the audience'sattention... it's the magnificent script, honorably written by Jo EllenJacob and Derek Vandergrift. They keep the story simple, yet it seepsthrough your core due to excellent dialog and attention to detail. Itsort of reminded me of a Quentin Tarantino film. Witty, Alert and Real.
Overall, I felt Scott's acting was mediocre, yet passable. It wasMaggie Bishop who stole the show. Her character development wassomething to celebrate... although, I feel the writers have somethingto do with that.
'Road to Kingsville' is absolutely worth Streaminging if you can look pasttechnological errors... but trust me, the story will be good enough.

At the beginning of the film, the audience is distracted by sounds ofsirens with no distinct origin. The first element of the film thatcaught me by surprise was Scott being bum-rushed by a woman with aweave, Maggie. What follows is one of the greatest shots I have everseen in inde film. You'll have to see it to believe it!
The plot begins with an unsupported dive into deep emotional turmoil.The plot thickens unexpectedly, and without any character buildup. Theaudience isn't even introduced to their identities before alife-changing decision is presented. Nonetheless, we become completelyhooked with the mysterious scenes that follow. These scenes depict acryptic turn of events which brought the two together. We canappreciate the political debate over marijuana in the car, with bothfavoring and opposing views expressed.
As the plot thickens, the intimacy between Maggie and Scott is felt bythe audience. The rest of the film is a wicked and unpredictable ridethat leaves you itching for more. The glitches that were troubling atthe beginning of the film turned out to be intentional characterdevelopment strategies. When the film was finished, I went back andre-Streaminged it! This film is worthy of trekking the Road to Kingsville.You will be entertained, enraged, and enticed to face the currentissues that are underground and facing the forefront of the nextgeneration.
